The Plasticities Jazz Band

The Plasticities Jazz Band is a dynamic ensemble of student musicians from Gunn High School in Palo Alto, California, formed in September 2024. While the group itself is newly established, its members share a long history of playing together through Gunn’s instrumental music program and other local ensembles. Their name—“The Plasticities”—draws inspiration from the psychological concept of brain plasticity, reflecting their flexible, evolving approach to jazz. Each member brings a distinct musical voice, contributing to a sound that’s both collaborative and constantly in motion.
Rooted in the traditions of swing, bebop, and modern jazz, The Plasticities perform a mix of classic standards, personalized arrangements, and original compositions. Their repertoire showcases not only technical skill but also a deep appreciation for improvisation and musical storytelling. The band was created as an extension of Gunn’s formal curriculum, giving students a space to explore jazz more freely and perform in community venues beyond the classroom. Their performances aim to connect with audiences of all ages, bringing youthful energy and thoughtful artistry to every stage.
The group is made up of passionate young musicians who are equally committed to growth and experimentation. Bassist Evan Holtman, for example, is also a producer whose beats and solo projects can be found on Instagram at @evan_holtman. His creative range—from upright bass grooves to digital production—embodies the band’s ethos of musical adaptability and cross-genre curiosity.
