The World Harmony Chorus

The World Harmony Chorus is a vibrant community ensemble that brings together singers of all ages and skill levels to explore the rich tapestry of global vocal traditions. Founded in 1999 by musician and educator Daniel Steinberg, the chorus operates in three California locations: Palo Alto, Berkeley, and Santa Cruz. With no auditions or prior experience required, the group fosters an inclusive environment where participants learn songs by ear, supported by musical transcriptions, making it accessible to both novices and seasoned vocalists.

Under the guidance of Daniel Steinberg and Betsy Blakeslee, the chorus delves into a diverse repertoire that spans urban jazz and gospel, hymns from Madagascar and Zimbabwe, Appalachian shape-note singing, Eastern European kolos, and Venezuelan choral works. This eclectic mix not only challenges singers but also offers solo opportunities, enriching the musical experience.

Daniel Steinberg, the founder, has been collecting choral music from around the world for many years, focusing on pieces that are engaging and enjoyable to sing. He has led Instant Chorus workshops at various festivals nationwide, known for his supportive teaching style and infectious enthusiasm. Beyond directing, Daniel performs with ensembles like Hillbillies from Mars and Tierra Vieja, and has co-hosted a radio talk show on food and cooking.

Betsy Blakeslee, directing the Oakland branch since 2008, brings a wealth of experience from leading choruses in California, the Balkans, and New York City. She founded Expressive Arts Refuge, an initiative that brings music programs to refugee camps across Europe and the Middle East. Her Balkan chorus has performed at significant events like the State of the World Forum and the UN Millennium Summit.
